Reflections of Service in 2016

By: Kirstin Abel

With 2016 now behind us, we would like to take some time to reflect on the year. In particular, we’d like to focus on the ways we spent time outside of the office. Our commitment to excellent service applies not only to our clients, but extends to serving others in the community. We feel it is our obligation to give back, and in doing so, not only will we be better lawyers, paralegals and legal assistants, but more importantly, we will be better people. Some highlights of the activities, committees and organizations we participated in during 2016 include:
  • The Portland Kitchen: using food and cooking to build life skills for underserved youth.
  • Oregon Food Bank: feeding Oregon and Southwest Washington’s hungry.
  • Girls on the Run: inspiring girls in 3rd-8th grade to think independently, understand the value of relationships and teamwork, and gain confidence to shape their world.
  • WaterWatch of Oregon: protecting and restoring Oregon’s rivers, streams and lakes for native fish, wildlife and people through community, legislative and legal action.
  • Oregon Humane Society: providing services for over 11,000 pets each year.
  • Legal Aid Services of Oregon Volunteer Lawyers Project: providing pro bono legal services throughout Oregon.
  • Community Law Week: an annual event of the Multnomah Bar Association providing community access to information about the law and legal resources.
  • Portland Pearl Rotary: a Rotary Club focused on service projects with the local community and nonprofits, fostering professionalism and international development.
  • Raphael House: providing support to victims of domestic violence through counseling, emergency shelter and advocacy.
  • KGW Great Toy Drive: providing toys for local children so all can experience the joy of the holidays.
  • St. Andrew Nativity School: a tuition-free private middle school serving under-represented youth and providing education to empower them to work toward college and beyond.
  • Girl Scouts Beyond Bars: a local Girl Scouts troop for young women whose mothers are incarcerated.
  • Portland State University Explore the Law Program: a free program offered to PSU students providing guidance, support and networking to those interested in a legal career. Students from under-represented communities are particularly encouraged to apply.
  • We the People Competition Program: promoting education about the Constitution and Bill of Rights, encouraging active participation in our democracy and developing powerful skills through a simulated congressional hearing competition.
  • Young Marines: a national youth organization encouraging responsible citizenship and a healthy lifestyle by providing development programs and teaching self-confidence, academic achievement and community service.
  • Portland Bureau of Transportation’s Budget and Bureau Advisory Committee: providing input on the city’s transportation budget and incorporating equity into transportation funding.
We are always working to better our profession. In addition to being members of many legal organizations, our attorneys give to our legal community through service on the following boards and committees:
  • Lewis and Clark Law School Mentoring Program
  • Multnomah County Bar Association Imprint Program
  • Oregon State Bar Mentoring Program
  • Oregon State Bar Professional Responsibility Board
  • Oregon State Bar Sustainable Future Section
  • Oregon Women Lawyers Foundation
  • Oregon State Bar Products Liability Section Executive Committee
  • Oregon Association of Defense Counsel Board
  • Multnomah Bar Association Young Lawyers Section Service to the Public
  • Oregon State Bar Procedure and Practice Committee
  • Defense Research Institute Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee
As you begin this new year, we encourage you to take active roles in your communities; sharing your talents and time with those around you. If any of the above organizations resonate with you, please let us know and we’ll be more than happy to get you involved!
